What is benzylmethyl ketone ?

Benzylmethyl ketone is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₅CH₂COCH₃. It is also called Bencilmetilcetona BMK. Main Uses of Benzylmethyl Ketone

1-Phenyl-2-propanone (P-2-P), also known as benzylmethyl ketone (BMK), is a colorless or slightly yellowish liquid. It has a density similar to that of water, as well as a pleasant aroma. Even if there are few legitimate uses of BMK, such as in the production of the pharmaceutical drug propyl-hexedrine, BMK is most often used as an illicit compound. Benzylmethyl ketone

Actually, BMK is identified by classical methods, such as gas chromatography, NMR or HPLC. These methods are expensive, time consuming and require the presence of trained operators. It seems obvious that there is an urgent need to develop a new quick and easy method that allows us to detect the presence of traces of benzylmethyl ketone.

In this work, a new chemically synthesized BMK derivative covalently bound to an immunological carrier was used to produce antibodies against BMK molecules. A biological assay based on fluorescence polarization was developed using the anti-BMK antibodies produced and the BMK derivative. The test shows interesting analytical yields with a detection limit of less than 100 nM and an almost linear response of up to 600 nM. Benzylmethyl ketone

Interestingly, the proposed test could be performed using a customizable portable instrumentation and could be used by untrained personnel at customized edges and control points or to perform rapid field inspections.

Materials and methods Benzylmethyl ketone
All reagents were of the highest commercially available quality and were used as received. 1- [3- (Dimethylamino) -propyl] -3-ethyl-carbodiimide (EDC), bovine serum albumin (BSA; fraction V), carboxymethoxylamine hemichydrochloride, benzylmethyl ketone (BMK), Eeph Sepharose 4B resin and buffers from Sigma Aldrich. The CF488A fluorescent probe was purchased from Biotium Inc.

Schleicher & Schuell nitrocellulose membrane transfermembrane was used and Amersham Biosciences ECL detection reagents were used in Western experiments. The rabbit polyclonal goat conjugate of IgG-HRP (secondary antibody) was from Abcam. The NMR spectra of the BMK derivative were recorded in a Varian Gemini 200 (200 MHz).
